If glam-rock
fashion really does have a resurgenece, you can blame it on costume
designer Sandy Powell. This 38-year-old Brit is responsible for
the glam extravaganza Velvet Goldmine. "The early '70s were
an influential period of my life," she says. "I remember desperately
wanting to have those clothes.

| With
Goldmine I got to design all the things I've always wanted."
Powell, whose other costume credits include Orlando, The
Crying Game, Interview With the Vampire and the upcoming
Shakespeare in Love, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Judi Dench, is
something of a clotheshorse herself. "My favorite designers are Galliano
and Gaultier, because they're so theatrical," she says. "I wear
a lot of Gaultier and Dirk Bikkembergs." Does she get influenced by
her films? "I had that glam-rock thing going when we were shooting,"
she admits. Now she's over it. Time for the rest of us to catch up!
